Martina
Hingis was born in a small town Kosice on September, 30, 1980.
The
parents of Martina - mum Melanie Molitor and father Karol Hingis -
had a big part of the tennis world and called their daugther in
honour of Martina Navratilova, a legendary Czech tennis player.
Martina
had loved sports when she was a kid. At the age of three she tried
ski for the first time and took a tennis racquet, and, at the age of
five, she began to play tennis, having
played at a big serious
tennis tournament in her life.
In
70s Melanie wanted to become the first in the world. She had become 22th
in
Czechslovakia, but thought of creating of her dream by the
daughter. To become wife of a
top player is very hard, and Melanie
married Karol Hingis, an unknown tennis coach, living
in Kosice. The
child was born on September, 30, and after two years Melanie
replaces favourite toy of her daughter
with a tennis racquet. A wall
of the bedroom becomes a
training wall. Having made the life of the
neighbours looking like a hell, the mother had
brought the child onto
the court. Karol tried to reduce Melanie's actions, but the woman was
the ruler in Hingis' family.
In
1985, when the organizators of a kids' tournament in Rostov (
Czechoslovakia ) saw
the girl, who was five, they thought they were
being joked. And in the first round the age
difference said its word
- 0:6, 0:6. Martina left , but, having come there next year,
perfectly had won the tournament.
Martina
was absording the lessons like a sponge at that time. At six she
began collecting
the local prizes, and Melanie was looking at the
future already. For the growing of the
daughter it was neccessary to
leave Karol, who, in Melanie's opinion, was a good man, but already
wasn't matching to the daughter's heights. In 1988 Melanie moves
together with the daughter, who was eight at that time, to Trubbach,
a small village in the north part of Switzerland, and marries the
second time a Swiss programmer Andreas Zogg.
At
eight Martina began getting used to the new rules, friends, and
language. And she made the progress at the school desk, and on the
court too. Soon there were no players younger
than eight to play
well against Martina. Since 1991 Martina has been winning a
tournament called "Little Masters" in Tarba ( the kids'
Roland Garros ) where Chang and Krajicek won.
And, of course,
many agents paid their attention at such wonder. One gave the best
terms : 200000 dollars per year , 15% of advertising agreements and
the money of the won tournaments is given away. The agreement
contained much risk, but... Who never makes
risk, that will never
become a great business man. And, in June of 1993, Martina
becomes the most youngest player of juniors, who won a GS
tournament. In a half of year, she gets the
main prize at the first
half-pro tournament, and then she wins at the junior
Wimbledon.
Already
when Martina was having the first progress, many were saying that
she was repeating the fate of Jennifer Capriati. Everybody
remembered her coming into the "top-ten"
and then getting
well at a drug hospital at 18 years old.
"
I think we are different " - Martina says. "Europe is not
the same as the United States. In the USA we are not given the time
to grow up, and then after using we are thrown away as a
bad
material. Then, having thought, Martina said " This year is too
important for me. I'm getting 17, and Jennifer "fell"
right at this point".
The
Hingis' mother does everything to prevent that. She had become, by
the way, a better teacher than Capriati's father was. She had
thought with what make the daughter engaged
at her free off-tennis
time. Martina loved horses, and the mother brought her to a riding
school. Melanie was said that it was dangerous, but she thought that
breaking the neck is not higher than corrupting Martina's childhood,
and Martina bought a horse for herself, having
got the first tennis
prize money. Now she has some horses. One she was given
at a
friendly match against Steffi Graf In Bratislava, Slovakia because
Martina had played the match free.
In
Bratislava the daughter sat next to the father on the tribune. Karel
Hingis still works at a tennis club in Kosice, sweeps the
courts, and leaves with his 80-years mum. His coming was
paid by the
organizators, because he has no money. After the daughter left to
Switzerland, they were having meetings not more often that two times
per year, but Karol was giving Martina boxes filled with sweets
using his friends. The tennis star calls the father
"tyatko".
The
Martina's love to the horses is known by all organizators of the
tournaments. And everybody tries to make something great of that
kind for Martina, while they has opportunities. At one of the USA
championships Martina was given a meeting with "The Great
Sigar" in the Baltimor park. Only to have a look at that house
the great money is paid by the people. At one championship of Paris
Martina got a good leather bridle. "I like to compite and
win." - Martina says.- "But I don't have bad
emotions in cause of lost matches. That happens because I have my
horses and they are always will be with me".
"
She has more talent than anybody of us ", - the tenth player of
the world Irina Spirlea says. "Her skill of seeing the game,
and the skill of thinking on the court are amazing. If you watch
a
Hingis' match, you'll see that she didn't move much, but she
always is on the needed point of the court. She was born with that
sense. Others may work hard, but they won't be even closely to
Martina. "
She
is a real star, who keeps ruding, because it is a feature of her and of
the people at the same age. She told a reporter that it was always
much harder for her to answer questions after a final, than just
play that, and she takes her trophies as some usual titles ( I have
a lot of them! ). Martina is kidding at her opponents : "
Seles? Fat! Sanchez? Old and slow! Pierce, Majoli, Huber, a new
generation? I defeated them all. The future belongs to me! ".
But, except the jokes, Martina takes Steffi very well and gives her
much of respecting. For Hingis Graf is always a great tennis player.
Martina
sings advertising contracts ( Sergio Tacchini, Opel, Omega, San
Pellegrino ) and now she is the most youngest sportswoman, who
got
more than a million at the tennis
tournaments. To defeat the little
Swiss in the Final of Chase Championships, Steffi Graf had
to
struggle during five sets. In January of 1996 Martina wins the
Australian Open, and she breaks the
record, belonging to Monica Seles. Hingis became the winner of a GS
tournament at 16 years, 3
months, and 26 days.
The
next 1998 year wasn't so lucky. But during this year Martina did
that other outstanding tennis players weren't able to do - she won
all of the double GS tournaments in a row. During that year a wax
copy Martina was built in London Museum of Wax Figures. Also during
that year Martina appeared on the first page of the Go
Magazine.
1999
year gave Martina new trophies and achievements, among of those
there are the third Australian double and single title in a row, the
first victories at Berlin and Montreal
tournaments, and the getting
the first WTA line back. Having become the runner-up at the
Roland Garros, the only tournament that Martina hasn't won yet,
Martina was defeated at the Wimbledon in the first round by Jelena
Dokic. It was the first time when Martina came there without
the mother.
In
2000 year Martina wins at the Pacific Open, defeats Lindsay
Davenport at the Ericsson Open, but the loses to Mary Pierce at the
Roland Garros, having missed another opportunity
to win at that
tournament. Then Martina loses to the second hard opponent for her,
Venus Williams at the Wimbledon, and at the US Open.
After
missing the Olympics in Sydney, Martina wins three tournament in a
row ( Filderstadt, Zurich, Moscow ) and finishes the season as the
number one.
It's
neccessary to tell about Martina's coming to Moscow more.
The
most biggest resistance Martina was given from Elena Dementieva in
the quarterfinals of the Cup. In the final Martina came across Anna
Kournikova. Anna said after the match that
she hadn't got power
enough to struggle against Martina. Also Anna said that Martina was
calm, and she controls the situation on the court always. Martina
has a giant experience - she has been the best tennis player of the
world for the fourth year and she won many finals
of hard
competitions.... So, in the finals the teammates had walked onto the
court and took many power of each other. Only about that
their
opponents dreamt! The double women's final had been played after the
single finals - and the pair Martina-Anna lost in the third
set, at
a tiebreak.
Reporters
asked Martina what she would like to wish to the youth of Russia. She
answered that the most important thing was to choose an aim and then
try to reach that. For ones the aim is tennis, for others it's
hockey, science of art, but the most important is one : to choose
something, the most important, and forget about others. It's
said also that Martina had a computer in the
head by the reporters! It controls her
opponents, analyzes, and understands
everyone of
them!
When
Martina was asked a question about the Moscow tournament, she
replied that the tournament was watched by her. And she was
surprised when saw such big pleasant
audience - the thing is not
that there is support, the main thing is that there are many
persons
on the tribunes, who understand tennis. Russia has many good
players, and it's the evident that the Russians understand tennis
well...American go to a tournament to eat sandwiches and hamburgers,
she added.
At
the Australian Open Martina had a big unpleasant moment of the life.
She had defeated everyone, but lost to Jennifer Capriati
in the finals suddenly. And, she hasn't won a
tournament yet. Only
the main doubles title of the Kremlin Cup she has got this year.
Now
Martina is injured and she stays always at home. Although it's heard
that she had begun
training, it is the evident that she wouldn't start playing soon.
Get well, Martina, and return as soon as it possible!
